Farmhouse Bistro

Virden, MB

You have to know where it is to get there, but once you make it, it’s worth it.

Tucked away inside the corner of a corner lies the Farmhouse Bistro run by Chef Aaron and his capable crew. It doesn’t look as exciting from the outside but you could spend some serious time wandering around inside checking out a fantastic display of antiques, farm house décor, and just cool stuff.

And the bathrooms. You have to see the bathrooms.

Chef Aaron has worked everywhere- from a conference center on Buffalo Point Reserve to Hecla Resort. He was working at a Seniors’ Home in Saskatoon when he saw the ad for a chef needed in Virden, MB.

Everything there was homemade- from the fridge pickles that garnish the dishes to the Pico de Gallo Sauce on top of my Navajo Sourdough Bannock Steak Sandwich.

Yes, you heard right. And yes, it was delicious.

The Sourdough Bannock was made of an ancient grain starter and fried to a golden and crisp, but soft, bed for that seared steak topped with gigantic onion rings. The entire entre was so big I struggled to finish it. And the fries. Did I mention a huge plate of fries?

IMG_6122 2And that’s just on a regular day. Every Saturday night is “Chef’s Special”- a three course meal with soup/salad, main, and dessert for a set price. If that isn’t enough of a special treat, every Sunday, Aaron and his team manage to also throw together a fantastic buffet complete with a carvery. It’s an entire weekend event!

Aaron’s staff are a wonderful team that work hard to make sure their customers are wowed by the fare and service in a small town restaurant- and they are really, really good at it.
